Our successful semi-pro rock/pop/gospel band, THE BLISS JOCKEYS, is looking to replace a member of its lineup:

THE BLISS JOCKEYS:


The Bliss Jockeys are a signed band which regularly plays well-attended gigs at some of NYC's best venues (Mercury Lounge, The Cutting Room, Cafe Wha?, etc.). We also play for label showcases, open for more established acts, perform at prestigious festivals, conferences and other high-profile events such as The Jammy Awards, and are about to release our first full-length album.

The band is unique in that we feature a gospel-style choir of 5 talented women, on top of regular male rock vocals and a full rock band lineup.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR:

PERSONALITY:
- Professional, Diligent, Responsible, Ethical, Non-flaky, & Cooperative--

We're looking for positive, earnest team-players-- Our band is a supportive family; we each put INDIVIDUAL egos aside for the success of the WHOLE.

 

DRUM SKILLS:
- Keep STEADY Time
- Keep STEADY Time
- (Did we mention...) Keep STEADY Time!!!
- Do NOT over-play
- Play tasteful fills when appropriate
- Lock in with bassist for a solid bottom
- Serve the song
- Play in a variety of styles: rock, blues, r&b, jazz, folk, pop & funk
- Learn & remember pre-existing parts and play them consistently
- Improvise and play solos during the drummer spotlight moment(s)
- Must have drum set (for when we play venues that DON'T have a house set)
- Preferable: Can play BOTH drum set AND hand percussion

BAND LOGISTICS:


TIME COMMITMENT:
- Weekly Rehearsal (every Mon 8pm-11pm, near Penn Station)
- One or Two Gigs each Month (usually on weekend night in NY area)
- Up to 4 times a year: A Weekend Day-Trip for out-of-town show (Philly, Boston, Upstate NY)


FINANCIAL DETAILS:
- The band shares EQUALLY in all proceeds earned from shows
- Beyond gig revenue, this is NOT a paid position
- (We're looking for true BAND-MATES, not HIRED GUNS)
- The bandleader pays all band-related expenses (rehearsal space rental, promotions, travel expenses, recording studio fees, etc.)
- For the future, we're targeting high-paid bookings (eg. college circuit) as means of income

ABOUT THE BAND:

 
MUSICAL INFLUENCES:
- Bruce Springsteen, The Animals, Phish, Dr. John

NON-MUSICAL INFLUENCES:
- Joseph Campbell ("Follow your bliss"), Carl Jung (Depth Psychology)

STYLE:
- Full rock-band + gospel-choir-style vocals (from 5 female backup singers)
- Bluesy harmonica, jazzy guitar licks, roots sounds, stomping & hollering
- Songs are: High-energy, upbeat, often with audience participation
- Mostly play originals, but also choice covers that highlight the vocal abilities of the female vocalists (Hallelujah, Black Horse and the Cherry Tree, The Letter, People Get Ready, Bodhisattva)
- Lead vocals are shared between Phil & female choir members 

ATTITUDE:
- Fun, earnest, spiritual, positive, non-ironic, all-inclusive

PERFORMANCE VARIETY:
- We play the full spectrum of shows:
- From large, amplified outdoor shows (w/hundreds of people)
- To small, intimate & unplugged house-concerts in living rooms (w/handful of people)

CAREER PROFILE:
The Bliss Jockeys are a signed band which regularly plays well-attended gigs at some of NYC's best venues (Mercury Lounge, The Cutting Room, Cafe Wha?, The Bitter End, The Living Room, Arlene's Grocery, etc.). We also play for label showcases, open for more established acts, perform at prestigious, high-profile events such as festivals, conferences and The Jam NYC Jammy Awards, and are about to release our first full-length album. Bandleader Phil Robinson is well-connected to venues, musicians, fan communities and promotional/recording resources throughout the NYC area.

DEBUT ALBUM:
The Bliss Jockeys are signed to indie label, Roomful of Sky Records, and will soon be releasing its debut CD, entitled 'The Birth of Bliss'.
